Thoughts on buying children’s clothes August 13, 2011

When my 6yo son, Adam, was younger, I bought a majority of his clothing at garage sales (not including shoes, underwear, and some outerwear). As he’s gotten older, it’s gotten more difficult to find clothing in his size at yard sales.

Gradually I have shifted over to buying his clothes new. It’s been interesting to discover which stores give me the most bang for my buck. In the past, I have bought a lot of jeans and t-shirts at Target, because their prices are reasonable to begin with and their clearance prices can be really fantastic.

However, I’ve slowly realized that shopping at higher-end clothing stores can be just as affordable, especially if I use coupon codes and cash-back sites like Ebates or Shopathome. I just got an email from Children’s Place showing that you can get jeans for $10.20 (toddler sizes less expensive) and graphic tees for $4.25 when you use a coupon code. Need to factor in their $5 flat shipping charge (occasionally I can get free shipping) but also factor in cash back through Ebates.

Time will tell if jeans from Children’s Place are any better than Target jeans, but there are certain clothes at Target that I don’t care for anymore — like their Cherokee t-shirts — so it’s fun to see what I can get at other stores for comparable prices.

Pampers – I just don’t get it January 18, 2010

I have always thought that Pampers were supposed to be the deluxe brand of diapers. They certainly are pricey.

That being said, I don’t understand why Pampers get damp on the outside after the inside has been wet for awhile. I finally realized it is not just my imagination — my son’s Onesie actually was damp after a night of sleeping in a Pampers Extra Protection diaper (and not from a leak).

For my money, Target brand diapers are the BEST.

I do prefer something with extra absorption for nighttime, so I guess Huggies Overnights are the best I’ve found for that. But from here on, I will not be buying Pampers anymore.

A couponer chuckles about this year’s gift exchange September 15, 2009

Every year now for almost ten years, our group of friends has a Christmas gift exchange. Traditionally the spending limit has been around twenty dollars, and it’s not unusual for hubby and I to complemplate this year’s gift choices months in advance.

In that spirit, just now I got a chuckle thinking about what kind of gift package I could put together for a twenty dollars out-of-pocket limit. How about forty boxes of cereal? Or forty boxes of granola bars? Sixty boxes of brand-name baby wipes?

Over the last several months I have begun using coupons, sales, etc., to stockpile household necessities for rock-bottom prices (sometimes, free). Never did I imagine I would want forty boxes of cereal in my basement… but then again, I never realized I could get good, healthy, yummy, brand-name cereal for 50 cents per box (give or take). Or “fancy” Secret deodorant for 29 cents each….or men’s shampoo or body wash (brand-name) for 50 cents each or even free.

Often I run into people who are amazed at the deals that I get, but these same people are resistant to the idea of stockpiling. Now, I’m not saying that someone new to couponing needs to run out and buy forty boxes of cereal ASAP. But for me at least, if I am going to put the time and effort into deal-shopping, I want to be able to buy five or ten of a given item when I find a screamin’ deal, not just ONE item.

It does take a bit of effort to find a good way to store the extras, but to me it is well worth it. Not one dime will come out of our household budget for peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, laundry detergent, toothpaste, shampoo, razors, bodywash, baby wash, baby wipes, flushable wipes, or toothbrushes… or even, perhaps, for a gift exchange gift …. for many months to come.

Easy, cheap, healthy food for kids July 4, 2009

Before I became a mom, I had no concept of how much of my day would be taken up with preparing, serving, and cleaning up from meals and snacks. It seems that every time I turn around, one of my two boys (ages 4 years and 8 months) needs to eat! So, I’m always on the look-out for healthy, inexpensive, easy-to-prepare foods.

In the summer, it seems like there is even less time to spend prepping and cooking. Just a simple, quick trip to the park in the morning can result in a lunchtime emergency when we all come in the door hot and hungry. Does anyone else run into this problem??? I have started to prepare lunchtime sandwiches and fruit at the same time I’m working on the mid-morning snack, so that I can pull out the sandwiches right when we come home from our morning outing.

A few of my favorite kid meals/snacks are

  • plain oatmeal (old fashioned or instant), jazzed up with peanut butter, honey, etc.
  • eggs in all their forms, but mostly scrambled because it’s so easy.
  • cut up fruit (apples, bananas, grapes)
  • baby carrots with dip
  • whole wheat pasta with olive oil & parmesan cheese
  • (Don’t throw me under the bus here) Lean Pockets, because they’re filling and have reasonable calorie and fat counts, though are pretty high in sodium
  • Peanut butter sandwich, of course!, on whole wheat bread
  • Grilled cheese on whole wheat
  • Whole wheat mac & cheese with a bag of frozen veggies mixed in
